Een schitterende voordekker met gewicht, en schrijven kan hij ook.
Hier het verhaal van de “Blackout “ BEL 80 in Douarnenez, door Thibaud.

Dromen doen we allemaal. “Als we een reeks 1 zeilen mag je m’n haar afscheren …….” zei Ben al lachend in de auto op weg naar Douarnenez.
Super gemotiveerd begonnen we dan ook aan die eerste reeks. Vanaf de start zagen we al dat de snelheid goed lag. Een goede 2 Beaufort en zevende aan de eerste boei.
Rondom ons enkel maar pro’s met een palmares waar je U tegen kon zeggen. Nu maar hopen dat we die plaats niet verliezen…
Enkel het tegendeel was waar. Datzelfde gevoel over de goede snelheid hadden we ook down wind, en die beneden ton konden we dan ook als zesde ronden.
Een klare kijk op de wind, een prachtig schaakspel van Manu en een paar goede meevallers met de verwachte shiften en hop … tweede aan de boven boei.
Ben werd een beetje nerveus, misschien ook omdat Manu en ik reeds aan het zingen waren; “En den Ben z’n haar gaat eraf ……”.
Beneden hadden wij - gezien de ligging van de finish - geopteerd voor de linker gate; Rus76 ging net achter ons aan de boei overstag omdat hij in onze vuile wind zat.
Snel zagen we dat de Rus76 steeds meer achter kwam, en dat onze keuze de goede was. Maar we voelden ook de steeds dichter komende UKR8 in onze nek.
De spanning was te snijden en aan de finish konden we nog net voor de Oekraïner overstag gaan en als eerste over de finish gaan.

Wat een gevoel… WAOW…. En diezelfde avond ging dan ook Ben’s haar af.
Een grote depressie kwam zich boven de baai van Douarnenez vestigen, en het zeer onstabiele weer heeft ervoor gezorgd dat we de volgende 2 dagen wachtend op enige wind en soms zelf dobberend op het water nog steeds konden genieten van die eerste race.
Van die groten der zeilers kan iedereen wel eens winnen, een meevaller noemen ze dat dan. Wij voelden dat niet zo, en dromen kunnen zich ook herhalen; voor wat geweest is maar ook voor wat komen zal.

Die laatste dag hadden ze ons vroeg uit bed gehaald, want er zouden nog minstens twee reeksen gevaren worden om de wedstrijd als geldig te verklaren.
Na een algemene terugroep van de eerste start werd al gauw de zo gevreesde ‘Black Flag’ gehesen.
En die tweede start was de goede, en ook voor ons.
Met een kleine vijf knopen aan wind konden we ons snel vrij varen en zochten we met zes ogen naar die kleine iets donkerder gekleurde plekjes op het water.
Het arendsoog van Ben en wederom mooi laveerwerk van Manu zorgden ervoor dat we die eerste ton na een lange en vermoeide 37minuten weer als zevende konden passeren.
Ook voor de wind was het moeilijk. Concurrenten gingen zowel extreem links als extreem rechts varen, en wij… in het midden.
Eerst ging de links gelegen groep snel, of zelf sneller, daarna was het de beurt aan die rechts gelegen boten, of toch niet, en die donkere wolk gaat zeker verandering brengen, maar wanneer? pfff….. uiteindelijk bleek het midden dan toch niet zo slecht.
We hadden ook hier reeds een paar boten ingehaald.
Het volgende kruisrak was de wind zoals verwacht gedraaid naar die donkere wolk toe en lichtjes gestegen. De rechterkant was duidelijk de goede kant en wie niet rechts lag was de pineut. En zo kwamen we als derde aan die 2e ronding van de bovenwindse ton en hadden we toch al een gat geslagen met de vierde.
Het waren UKR9 en Rus76 die voor ons lagen. En dat is zo gebleven tot aan de finish.
Daar als eerste aangekomen mocht UKR9 zeer gefrustreerd zijn bootnummer terugvinden op het bord van de ‘Black Flags’ en werd deze niet getoeterd bij het passeren van de aankomstlijn.
Rus76 lag net iets te ver voor, zodat we enkel nog onze 2e plaats konden verzilveren. Ook hier waren we zeer gelukkig; want nu kwamen ze ons allen feliciteren.
Je voelde goed aan dat ze nu wel rekening moesten gaan houden met die amateurs. BEL80 was vanaf nu de favoriet om te winnen….
Niets is permanent alleen maar verandering; en we hadden het moeten weten toen ze die’ Black Flag’ ophesen bij de laatste race. Al gauw werden we over de startlijn meegesleurd door andere boten, dit zeker vijf seconden voor de start. Een algemene terugroep en bang afwachten waren het gevolg. Het grote bord toonde niet veel later de bootnummers en BEL80 stond er samen met acht andere nummers bij. We konden alleen nog maar richting Douarnenez varen.
Rus76 werd de derde reeks 44e en in het algemeen klassement 3e. Den405 werd uiteindelijk de terechte eindoverwinnaar met een 4e, 3e en 3e plaats. Ukr7 2e met 6e, 6e en 7e plaats. Teleurgesteld maar ook tevreden over die twee uitzonderlijke prestaties kijken we terug naar deze wedstrijd. Een gemiste kans om op het podium te staan, maar we komen zeker terug.

Result - GP Guyader & 5 Nations Cup (6/18)

The GP Guyader of 2012 was a special one - only 3 races have been sailed and the regatta started with an absolute cracker:
the BEL 80 winning the first race!
Second Race on the last day: 2!!!!!
third race: Black Flag :-(. Final result 19 on 73 dragons.
Thus another top 20 in GP in 2012 for the Blackout team.

The BEL-79 had a great prep race (coupe du bretagne) but the GP was a bit less (51/38/DNF): 63 on 73 dragons.

5 Nations Cup Result (6/18 races):
BEL 80: 219pt - and taking a big lead!
BEL 79: 99pt
BEL 69: 80 pt
BEL 78: 54pt
BEL 75: 23pt
The BEL 80 is now take a break - thus the opportunity for the other teams to close-up

Seems like we'll have a battle between the Belgian, German & UK sailors. This also shows that the BDA dragons are very active abroad considering the number of dragons per country. Next races are 2 weekend in Muiden & then the Belgian season is starting!!

The 5th regatta (Opening - Muiden (NL)) of the 5 Nations Cup didn't take place.... Thus the results of the 5 Nations Cup hasn't changed.... Next update beginning of next week after the GP Guyader

Results - Finale & 5 Nations Cup (4/18)

Dear BDA fans,
During the Petticrows Clinic in Aalsmeer, given by Tim Tavinor (Petticrows) and Pedro Andrade, 2 of our BDA teams tried the 2012 Petticrows and they all gave their thumbs up for the enhancement work Petticrows did.
At the end of the day we had the honours to congratulated Xavier & Ann with their new dragon ;-) !!! We all will be able to see their brand new dragon during the Belgian races of the 5 Nations Cup.

During the past weekend 4 Belgian teams – YES 4!! were battling the Aalsmeer “Finale” once again in different weather conditions (2<->4/5 bft and very shifty winds).
As predicted the battle between the NL-402 “Bakkers” & the BEL80 took place for the overall standings of the GP of Aalsmeer (3 weekends).
Other battles were seen between André (with his Petticrows 2011 & regular team) and Tim with his Petticrows 2012 & “Cazaux” crew (Nicola & Thomas Wilton).
With 21 dragons on the Westeinderplassen the results of the Finale were:
4th place for the BEL 80 team with Thibaud back on board
5th place for the BEL 79
9th place for the BEL 78 bit by bit showing their potential 
and a 13th place for the BEL 69 with Karl on board.

Results - Paashazen & 5 Nations Cup (3/18)

Hello BDA followers,
The Easter weekend in Aalsmeer (NL) had to be sailed in different weather conditions (from 2<->4/5 bft; N-ZW; sun/rain) but it stayed rather cold instead of last years 25°C.
The BEL 78 had their kick-off of their season with a new team (Thomas, Frank & Steven), the other members of the Belgian Dragon Armada were the BEL 69 (with 4 supporters!) & BEL 80.
The BEL 79 apparently had crew problems (Please notice that the BDA has a service – “Crewlist” to help you when this happens) and didn’t sail but they will be back for next weekend Finale in Aalsmeer.
As predicted the battle between the NL-402 “Bakkers” & the BEL80&69 took place :-) – some even ending on the jury table after a new Dutch interpretation of “taking a gate” but even so the Dutch sailors remained in the lead.
With 18 dragons on the Westeinderplassen the final result was:
2nd place for BEL 80 team with an old Cadet sailor Bart Janssens
Yet another 6th place for the BEL 69 & a 8th place for the BEL 78.

Next sailing actions will be the Petticrows clinic followed by the “Finale” in Aalsmeer. We’ll see even more close battles from the Belgian Dragon Armada (BEL69/78/79/80).

Results - 5 Nations Cup (2/18) after Sneeuwruimen

Hello Dragon Enthusiasts,
Last week a lot of sailing action took place.
The BEL 75 was racing in Sanremo, Open Italian Championship, and finished 34 on 47 dragons not a bad result as they had all kind of weather conditions and waves.
In Holland (Aalsmeer) the BEL 69/79/80 kicked off the Dutch racing season with Sneeuwruimen – well no snow at all but a nice sunshine and what great results for the Belgian teams.
Another win for the BEL 80 – 6th place for BEL 69 & a 7th place for the BEL 79. 19 dragons entered the competition.

Next sailing action will take place during the Eastern weekend in Aalsmeer. Where the BEL 78 will kick-of their season and be added the Belgian Dragon Armada (BEL69/79/80)!!

Results of the 5 Nations Cup after GP Cannes

The results after the first of the 18 Regattas:
2 belgian dragons have sailed in Cannes. The first day started super with BEL-80 in the TOP-10. On the second day no races were sailed due to not enough wind. The 3 day wasn't a very goodday for the Belgian team with BEL-80 finishing outside the TOP 20 & 4 day the conditions were splendid: Sun - Wind.... and our teams did manage to regain some places.
The GP was once again a superb event!!

This give the following end-result (GP Cannes: 55 dragons)
BEL 80 inside the TOP 20: 18th place!!!
Bel 75: 47th place

This gives the following results

BEL 75 23pt

5 Nations Cup Best Nation:
40pt for CH/SWE/RUS/GER/GBR/FIN

5 Nations Cup Launch & Presentation

The presentation of the 5 Nations Cup as given yesterday @ 21h during the nocturne@ the Belgian Boat Show can be found in the Press Release Section of our site.
The BDA want to thank everybody (Sailors, supporters, guest, ....) for making the launch a success..... our last guests left around 24h :-)  
Happy Sailing for our teams going to Cannes in 2 weeks time to sail agains the best of the world. We're going to inform you during the régatta's via twitter (and facebook)

Next (non-5 Nations Cup) BDA event will be BDA Algemene Vergadering @31/03 17h in Nieuwpoort

Launch 5 Nations Cup Tonight!!

·         Tonight is the night... @21h Launch of the BDA's Dragon 5 Nations Cup

We'll have a great Launch - surprise "snacks/fingerfood" - Brugse Zot & Champagne :-) and lot's of good sailors, supportors,... - although some people will be missed :-( - Yesterday the TV channel VTM came to our booth to run an program about Royality / blue blood & Dragons Sailing.....
